Ancient Roman Gold Glass Beaded Strand 20" #1

#SHA5

Gold glass beads seem to have been introduced during the third century BC. They are know to have been made in Rhodes and probably Egypt. Perisa, Syria and areas around the Black Sea might also have produced their own gold glass or imported it from the Mediterranean.

The first gold glass beads no doubt imitated solid gold beads and were made from thin sheets of gold encased between two layers of clear glass. For full description see Maude Spaer’s article in Beads: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers 1993 Vol. 5. Soon imittions of gold glass beads followed. Some of these used inferior yellow metals, while other encased silver between layers of amber colored glass. Because the foil has deteriorated over time it is not always possible to know exactly what was used.
Production of various kinds of gold glass may have lasted into the 13th century in some areas, but most beads are much earlier.

This strand includes a nice mix of some gold glass beads that still retain their full golden luster, some silver glass beads, some amber glass with foil beads and some amber colored beads that have either lost their foil, or possibly never had any. Several classic collared beads are included as well as segmented beads that were not separated.

The beads on this strand range from 7 x 8 mm for the larger beads at the bottom, to 1 x 2 mm for the smallest beads at the end.  Almost all of the beads on this strand have nicely finished smooth ends. These beads have been examined and authenticated as Roman Period gold glass beads by the two top bead researchers in the US.
