COMMON USES FOR DIFFERENT WIRE GAUGES

The following chart is a general guideline for which gauges of wire are generally used for different kinds of jewelry making projects. The gauge refers to the thickness of the wire; the smaller the number, the thicker the wire.  It is important to remember that this is a general guideline for how to use the different wire gauges, for a lot will depend on the type of wire you are using.

28 gauge Coiling, weaving, crocheting, viking knit, wire wrapping very small light-weight beads This wire is very fine, almost thread-like.  As a result, it can kink and break easily, but is also very pliable.  Should not be used to make open loop links or as structure wires.  Use regular or fine-tipped tools to manipulate.
26 gauge Coiling, weaving, crocheting, viking knit, wire wrapping small beads and briolettes, ball top headpins, wrapping around stones This wire is also very fine, but is stronger than 28 gauge wire.  Can be used as a structure wire for small beads, but should not be used to make open loop links.  Use regular or fine-tipped tools to manipulate.
24 gauge Coiling, weaving, headpins, spirals, wire wrapped links, cage wrapping and setting stones, small jumprings Very versatile wire, fine enough to fit through the holes of most beads, but strong enough to keep its shape. Should not be used to make open loop links, however.  Use regular or fine-tipped tools to manipulate.
22 gauge Wire wrapped links, open loop links for light weight beads, small delicate clasps, headpins and eyepins, earwires, bails for top drilled pendants, spirals, jumprings Also a versatile wire with many jewelry making applications.  Will fit through the holes of most beads, with the exception some freshwater pearls and small faceted stones and briolettes.  Use regular tools and hands to manipulate.
20 gauge Earwires, jumprings, hoop earrings, delicate clasps, open loop links, headpins and eyepins, spirals, rings, bails for stones 20 gauge wire is good for a variety of other delicate handcrafted findings, like links or looped chandelier earring components. Slightly more difficult to wire wrap with than 22 gauge.  Use regular tools and hands to manipulate.
18 gauge Bails, large jumprings, delicate clasps, bracelets, handmade links and components 18 gauge wire is great for making handmade links and components to connect beads with.  Use regular tools and hands to manipulate.
16 gauge Clasps, Bails for heavy pendants, rings, cuff bracelts, bangles, thick jumprings, neck collars Use heavy duty jewelry tools to cut and shape.  16-gauge wire is usually available in dead soft, and will hold up well to hammering and texturizing.
14 gauge Clasps, thick jumprings, neck collars, cuffs, bangles, rings 14 gauge wire is often only available in dead soft in most materials. Use heavy duty jewelry tools to cut and shape.
12 gauge Neck collars, rings, cuffs, bangles 12 gauge wire is often only available in dead soft in most materials. Use heavy duty jewelry tools to cut and shape.
